Thanks for downloading Postal Uzi! From the creator of Mac Dingbats!
I'm a graphic designer and recently some Business Reply Envelopes I had worked on were shot down by the US Postal Service because the POSTNET barcodes were incorrect. So, I have decided to fight back with Postal Uzi, my fifth font.
Similar to other POSTNET barcode fonts you may have encountered, Postal Uzi is designed EXACTLY as specified in Designing Flat Mail, Publication 63, May 1995 and Designing Reply Mail, Publication 353, July 1995 by the United States Postal Service. Both of these publications are current as of January 1, 1997. Until these standards are changed, Postal Uzi will remain accurate to within 8/ten-thousandths of an inch.
How Postal Uzi works:
As outlined in the crude chart below (but looks pretty good when printed), a POSTNET barcode begins and ends with a frame bar. The middle section is the zip code, the four digit extension, and a correction character. You see, in the POSTNET world zip code numbers, when added, must equal a multiple of ten. In the chart's example, the zip code is 20260-6805. When added, 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 + 0 + 6 + 8 + 0 + 5 = 29. To make 29 an multiple of ten, you must add the correction character, in this case 1. (29 + 1 = 30)
The frame bar can be achieved by typing ` or =. Only numeric keys above the alpha set work (i.e. the keypad numbers are inoperable.) Postal Uzi should only be used at 10 point size, plain style.
Postal Uzi is shareware!
I would like to say that understanding the Post Office books and designing this very precise font was easy. I would also like to say that mail never gets lost. I would like to, but I can't. It was quite a bit of work getting Postal Uzi up to spec. I personally am indebted to font designers who have paved the way before me. However, a nameless post office in a nameless city was SO picky about variance, that I felt the best thing to do was design an extremely accurate POSTNET font of my own.
Postal Uzi costs $5 US. And I'm not going to raise that price no matter how high they raise the cost of stamps. When you pay your shareware fee, I'll email you my latest font as a "thank you" for your contribution. (Be sure to include your email address!)
